What the tour is like

It is not a tour. You receive a park ticket valid for the whole day. Jingshan is a low hill, maybe 50 metres high, with a paved path to the summit. There is no guide, no group, and no experience attached. The value is the view: from the summit, you see the entire roofscape of the Forbidden City spread out to the south. The golden roofs are visible, the walls are visible, and the layout of the palace becomes obvious when you can see it from above. The walk up takes 10–15 minutes. The climb is steep but not technical. Once at the summit, there is a pavilion and room to stand. Ninety-four reviews at 4.5 stars. Book this only if you plan to visit the palace itself. The view only makes sense if you understand what you are looking at. Visit after you exit Shenwumen, the north gate, because you are tired and the park is right there. Bring water; it is a steep walk. Go in the late afternoon for better light on the photos. In winter, the trees are bare, so the view is better. In summer, the trees can obscure some buildings.

Is Jingshan worth visiting if I also do the Forbidden City tour?

Yes. You get the palace from inside walking it. From Jingshan, you see the whole structure from above. Together they give you two completely different perspectives on the same place.

How long does the Jingshan visit take?

15 minutes to the top, maybe 20–30 minutes sitting at the summit. If you are not in a rush, stay longer; the light changes as the afternoon moves. Late afternoon is best for photography.

Is the climb dangerous or very difficult?
