How to get to the Forbidden City: metro lines and the 20-30 minute walk

Use the metro. Line 1 to Tiananmen East or Tiananmen West for the main (south) entrance. From the metro, allow 20–30 minutes to walk to the gate and pass through Tiananmen Square security. No parking exists at the gates.

Getting to the Meridian Gate (south entrance)

Take Beijing Metro Line 1 to either Tiananmen East (Tiananmen Dong) or Tiananmen West (Tiananmen Xi). From either station, you walk north across Tiananmen Square toward the red gate. The walk is straightforward but the square is vast and it is usually crowded.

Before you reach the Forbidden City gate, you pass through Tiananmen Square security. This is a separate security check with its own ID requirement (your passport). This is not part of the Palace Museum security; the square has its own perimeter check. Allow 15 minutes for this queue.

After the square security, you continue north until you reach the Meridian Gate. That is where your real-name ticket booking is verified. Total time from metro to gate: 20–30 minutes if the square is not particularly crowded. Add time if it is busy.

There is no parking at the gates

Taxis cannot stop at the Meridian Gate or any palace entrance. If you arrive by car, you must park elsewhere and walk or take the metro from another station. The main commercial parking is south of the square or in the surrounding streets. But the metro is faster and cheaper than driving in central Beijing.

Leaving from the north gate (Shenwumen)

When you exit the palace at the Gate of Divine Might (Shenwumen) on the north side, the nearest metro is Line 8 to Shichahai. That station is useful for leaving but not for entering; it does not connect easily to Tiananmen. If you are planning to visit Jingshan Park after the palace (which most people do), you exit at Shenwumen and walk 100 metres west to the park entrance.

Getting there early

The palace opens at 8:30. If you arrive at Tiananmen East or West at 8:15, you are already in a queue for the square security. Allow those 20–30 minutes.
