Jingshan Park: the Forbidden City view from above
This is not a Forbidden City tour, but it is the natural next step. You exit the palace at Shenwumen, walk west 100 metres, and climb a small hill in Jingshan Park. From the top, you see the whole palace spread below you, with all the golden roofs and courtyards visible at once. It is the only viewpoint where the architecture makes sense as a unified design. Inside the palace, you see one axis and the courtyards adjacent. From Jingshan, you see the entire thing.
The climb is short but steep — maybe 10 minutes to the top if you are moving normally. The park is open all day with one ticket. You can visit the palace in the morning, skip to lunch, and come back up at 4 PM when the light is better. Many photographers do exactly this.
A tour package includes both the palace and Jingshan, or you can do them separately and buy the Jingshan ticket at the gate.

Do I have to climb Jingshan right after the palace?
No. The ticket is valid all day. You can leave, rest, eat and come back. Late afternoon light is often best for photography.
How long does it take to walk Jingshan?
The climb to the top is about 10 minutes. If you wander the pavilions and take photos, add another 30 minutes. Most people spend an hour there total.
Is the view worth the extra ticket?
Yes. It is the only place where you see the palace as a complete design. Inside, you see one axis. From the hill, you see everything at once.
