Forbidden City tour prices: what each price band actually buys

In short: seven tours on a ladder that runs from a large-group guided walk up to a ten-hour day covering three sites, each step adding a different mix of guide, group size and scope. On all of the guided options the admission ticket is included in the price rather than added to it, which is why the bottom of the ladder is so much cheaper than people expect. The figures are in the table below.
Official gate price¥60 (Apr–Oct), ¥40 (Nov–Mar)
Cheapest tour$3, English or Spanish
Most booked$16, flagship
Tiananmen pairing$17
Full day + Temple$43
Bare entry ticket$5, no guide

The price baseline: the gate price

Entry to the Palace Museum is ¥60 during high season (April–October) and ¥40 in low season (November–March) — under ten US dollars either way. That is what you pay if you book direct through dpm.org.cn or the WeChat Mini Program yourself, and it is the number every price below should be judged against.

The thing most people get wrong: on these tours the admission ticket is included in the price, not added to it. It is not a booking fee on top of the gate price. That is why the cheapest guided option is startling — it lands close to what admission alone would have cost you, and a guide comes with it. What you are paying for above that line is group size, language, pace and how much of Beijing gets covered in a day.

$5: bare entry ticket, no guide

Just the entry booking, no running commentary, no hand-holding. Tour id 14794 on GetYourGuide. For independent travellers who read Mandarin, or who are confident working from thin bilingual signage. It costs about what admission costs. The reason this is 4.4 stars (the lowest-rated of the seven) is honest: people who expect a guide and get none are disappointed. It is the right product for solo backpackers and wrong for most others. Rated 4.4 from 1,032 reviews.

$3: cheapest guided option, large group

English or Spanish guide, entry included, large group, fast pace. 4–4.5 hours. Wheelchair accessible. Tiananmen Square available as an add-on option. This is astonishing value: you get a guide and entry for $3. The trade: the group is large and the pace moves fast. Tour id 195551 on GetYourGuide. Rated 4.7 from 2,394 reviews. Reviewers call it "extraordinary value" and note the group size and guide speed. If budget is the constraint, this is the answer.

$16: flagship, small group, hotel pickup available

Entry included, English and Chinese guides, small group (not a bus), group or private options. 2–8 hours depending on whether you choose group or private. Hotel pickups available on some slots; group option meets in front of Laoshe Teahouse. This is the most-booked option. Rated 4.8 from 10,072 reviews. Reviewers praise the guide, the handling of the ticket and passport check, and that the group is small enough to actually walk at your own pace inside. The step up from the cheapest guided option buys you a smaller group and the option to add hotel pickup. Tour id 459862 on GetYourGuide.

$17: Tiananmen Square + Forbidden City

Entry to both included, English, Spanish, French, German, Italian guides, 2.5–8 hours. Hotel pickup available. This is the standard pairing: Tiananmen Square is south of the Meridian Gate and has its own security check. A tour that covers both saves you a second security line and a second booking window. Same price point as the historian in-depth option below. Tour id 763759 on GetYourGuide. Rated 4.8 from 5,935 reviews.

$17: historian in-depth, small group, specialized

Entry included, Spanish and English guides, small group, 2.5–3 hours, private option, wheelchair accessible. This is the specialist offering: real history and architecture, not the standard tour script. Only 25 reviews so far — frame it as promising rather than proven. Rated 4.6. Reviewers note the depth and the small group. The $17 price matches the Tiananmen option but the offering is completely different: history instead of two sites. Tour id 990428 on GetYourGuide.

$43: full day, Tiananmen + Forbidden City + Temple of Heaven

Entry to all three sites, Chinese, English, French, Italian, Japanese, Thai, Spanish guides, 10 hours, hotel pickup available. This is the full-day itinerary: three major sites in one push. You need stamina. Rated 4.7 from 58 reviews. Reviewers confirm it is a long day and good value for three sites. Tour id 1267958 on GetYourGuide.

$5: Jingshan Park, not a Forbidden City tour

Not entry to the palace itself; the park on the hill directly north of the exit gate. A ticket valid all day. Jingshan gives the only view of the whole Forbidden City roofscape from above. Worth adding to any palace visit if you have 1–2 hours spare. Rated 4.5 from 94 reviews. Reviewers confirm the view and note that the climb is short but steep. Best done at the end of the palace visit, not the start. Tour id 1166838 on GetYourGuide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the $3 budget tour worth it?

If budget is tight, absolutely. You get entry and a guide for $3. The group is large and the pace moves fast, but reviewers consistently praise the value. See the tour comparison.

Why does the $5 bare ticket have 4.4 stars when others are 4.7+?

Because people buy an entry ticket expecting a guide and get neither commentary nor hand-holding. It is the right product for a confident solo traveler and wrong for most others. See which tour is right for you.

What is the markup over the ¥60 gate price?

This is the part people misread. On these tours the Palace Museum ticket is included in the price rather than added to it, so you are not paying the gate price and then a fee on top. Admission alone is ¥60 in high season, under ten US dollars — which means the cheapest guided option costs about what letting yourself in would have cost, with a guide included. The money above that buys group size, language and scope.

Can I add Tiananmen Square or the Temple of Heaven to any tour?

The $17 Tiananmen tour includes the square. The $3 budget tour offers Tiananmen as an add-on option at checkout. The $43 full-day tour includes both the square and Temple of Heaven. No other tours include these sites.
