Why winter is better than summer

In November through March, the palace is open low season hours and costs less to enter (¥40 instead of ¥60). More importantly, far fewer people book it. A winter weekday afternoon in January will have enough space that you can actually stand in front of a hall and look at it, without someone’s shoulder in your way. A summer Saturday at noon is a wall of people moving in one direction.

I have guided groups in both seasons and the difference is enormous. Winter is a museum visit. Summer is a forced march.

Weekdays vs weekends

Weekdays are emptier than weekends. A Tuesday in low season is a different palace from a Saturday in summer. If you have any flexibility, choose a weekday.

National holidays and golden weeks

Avoid them. China’s national holidays — Spring Festival, National Day, the mid-Autumn festival, and the one-week golden weeks — draw millions of domestic tourists. The palace hits its 80,000-a-day cap regularly during these weeks. If you show up expecting to book a walk-in ticket, you will not get one. Even with a real-name booking, you will be in crowds that make any visit miserable.

Morning vs afternoon

Arrive early. Between 8:30 and 10:00 is ideal. By noon, the palace is full. Late afternoon, when the sun is lower, has slightly fewer people because some visitors have left and it is getting close to closing time. But the gates still close at 17:00 (high season) or 16:30 (low season), so you cannot gain much time by arriving late.

Weather and light

Clear days are prettier than overcast days; the gold of the roofs shows better. But I would not base your visit date on weather. Crowding matters infinitely more. A crowded sunny day is worse than an empty overcast day.
