Temple of Heaven, Tiananmen and Forbidden City Day Tour review

Full-day tour review
My verdict: three major sites in one 10-hour day. Temple of Heaven (morning), Tiananmen Square (midday), Forbidden City (afternoon). Pickup available. Languages include Thai, Japanese, French, and Italian alongside English and Spanish. Only for visitors with serious stamina.

What the tour is like

You are picked up at your hotel and driven to the Temple of Heaven, where you spend a few hours exploring gardens, the main prayer hall, and the Echo Wall. By early afternoon, the guide drives you to Tiananmen Square for the security check and a walk through the monument area. Then it is north to the Forbidden City, the one-way route from the Meridian Gate to Shenwumen. You enter around 2 or 3 pm (depending on traffic and morning pace) and walk the palace. You exit the north gate by late afternoon or early evening. Ten hours sound like a lot because it is a lot. The pace is steady; you do not stay anywhere long. This is the broadest geographic tour, covering the three most-visited official sites in Beijing. Only 58 reviews, but rated 4.7 stars. The reviews highlight pickup, value, and the chance to see three things in one day. The complaints are about the length and pace.

What works

  • Three major sites in one day — incredible geographic coverage
  • $43 is strong value for three entry tickets, transport, and a guide
  • Hotel pickup included
  • Six language guides available (most options of any tour here)
  • All entry tickets arranged by the operator
  • Good for visitors with one day in Beijing

Worth knowing

  • 10 hours is a genuinely long day
  • Pace is moving throughout — you do not linger anywhere
  • Small review sample (58 only) compared to other tours
  • Not suitable for visitors who tire easily or have mobility issues
  • No time for lunch break; bring snacks

Insider tip

Only book this if you are prepared for a long day of walking and climbing stairs. Temple of Heaven has hills; the palace has uneven stone. Wear the most comfortable shoes you own. Bring water, sunscreen, and a light snack. Have a good night of sleep the night before. The pace is fast because you have three places to see; if you want depth at any one site, choose a single-site tour instead.

Who it’s for

Visitors with only one day in Beijing who want to see the major official sites. Travellers with high stamina who do not mind a fast pace. Anyone visiting with a partner or small group where language variety matters (Thai, Japanese, French guides here). If you want to spend real time at one place, the flagship tour or historian tour are better. If you tire easily, pick one site and do it properly.

Frequently asked questions

Is 10 hours too long for one day?

It is a full day. Temple of Heaven alone is 2 hours. Tiananmen Square is 45 minutes. The Forbidden City is 2–3 hours minimum. Add transport and security queues, and 10 hours is realistic. Not too long if you like walking; definitely too long if you tire easily.

Why does the tour cover three sites instead of just one?

Because they are all in Beijing and all iconic. The assumption is that if you have one day, you want to see the three biggest things. If you prefer depth over breadth, book a tour for just one site.

Do the entry tickets come included, or do I pay extra?

All three entry tickets are included in the $43 price. You do not pay separately at any gate.
